Bosch 1617EVS 2-1/4 HP Variable-Speed Router

Bosch recently introduced routers that they claim have the highest power-to-weight ratio in the industry. We believe them. The 1617EVSB variable-speed router features a stout, 2-1/4-horsepower motor coupled with an aluminum base and housing. The result is a well-balanced and smooth-operating machine that offers fast results in demanding applications. We love the nicely finished hard-maple handles that make this router feel like a fine-woodworking tool. Something Bosch engineers are proudest of is what they call the "precision centering system," which makes the router bit track at true center. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it.

The variable-speed dial allows you to set the optimal speed for the task. And with built-in Constant Response Circuitry, your router will maintain a constant speed throughout the cut, so you get clean, accurate results. With its integrated soft-start feature, the motor reduces torque upon startup for a smooth transition and easy handling. The 1617EVS's design adapts to let you work with the switch and cord on the right or the left, giving you improved consistency and precision, as well as the confidence knowing that the motor won't rotate during depth adjustment.Accurate Fixed Base CutsThis versatile kit provides all the components necessary for fixed-depth routing. Microfine bit-depth adjustment on the base, with an overall range of one inch and accuracy to 1/64 inch, allows for accurate and fast changes. And the Bosch Precision Centering Design allows the bit to be centered with the sub-base or optional template guides. This makes it easier than ever to keep the bit on the intended cutting-line when using guidance devices such as jigs, templates, or dovetail fixtures. The fixed base includes threaded holes for mounting to router tables, and its advanced bit-height adjustment system allows you to conveniently adjust the bit height from above the router table. The base also features a quick-clamp system for fast, tool-free conversions, so moving the motor between two bases takes only seconds and requires no equipment.Quick-Change Template Guide AdapterThe spring-loaded template guide adapter makes it easy to use your router with Bosch RA-Series Template Guides (sold separately), as well as with a number of special accessories and templates for creating precise repeated patterns, inlays, and more.Rugged Design for Increased DurabilityThe Bosch 1617EVS Router is durable and built for years of use. The motor housing and bases are made of aluminum, and the power switch is completely dust-sealed for added durability. This router is backed by a one-year limited warranty, 30-day money-back guarantee, and one-year service protection plan. What's in the BoxBosch 1617EVS 2-1/4 HP Variable-Speed Router, RA1161 Fixed Base, 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch self-releasing collets, tool-free template guide adapter, drop-forged wrenches, chip shield, above-table height-adjustment wrench, and mounting hardware. The motor's speed range features Constant-Response Circuitry for clean, consistent results. It's an important feature for multiple-pass applications, like jig cutting, and fine woodworkers will particularly appreciate it. Ease of height adjustment is a way of measuring quality in routers, and Bosch has come up with a system that works as well as any we've tested. A large flip lever releases the motor for adjusting. Rather than twisting as the height changes, the motor raises and drops in a straight path. The result is a simple and smooth-working course adjust that couples with an efficient microadjust to make fine-tuning the depth of cut easy and accurate. Another feature we like is the reversible motor, which lets the user place the switch and cord on either side. It's good for lefties, and for those of us who get annoyed when the cord always seems to be in the way. The collet is self-releasing, which means there's no need to tap the spindle to change bits, and the collet depth is 13/16 inch, a few 16ths deeper than that of DeWalt or Porter-Cable--one more weapon in the Bosch battle to for a truly centered bit. --Mark McDonald From American Woodworker Bosch's 1617EVS router has been out for a while, which gave me a chance to put it through its paces. It's now become one of myfavorites. It's light in weight, partly due to the magnesium base. The 2-1/4-horsepower motor has a soft start and is variable speed, rangingfrom 8,000 to 25,000 rpm. Two things made me truly love this router:it's easy to change the depth of cut and the guide bushings. To change depth, release the clamp that holds the base to the motor and dial themicroadjust. If you want to make big adjustments, a quick release lets you advance the router in bigger increments. The quick release also made it easy to remove the motor from the base to change bits. This is one of the all-around best routers I've put in a router table. Aspring-loaded clip holds guide bushings (an optional accessory) inplace. To change or remove them, simply slide the retainer out of the way and out pops the bushing. I had no trouble with guide bushings staying in place under a load.

I use a router table, where it is comfortable: it's easy enough to handle when it is installed under the table, the controls are easy to reach and height adjustment is fabulous. For more information on adjusting the height of this router - I have used many other routers, but no height adjustment as smooth as this precisey and Bosch. All you have to do is unlock the controller, turn on a tower, and a little up and down slowly for you. So you can lock your controller and you're done. The soft-start is wonderful. The speed is very responsive and has many settings, which is good if you make raised panel doors. As far as cutting goes, I'm very happy. The router keeps the speed constant through the forest, whether you are a Dado cutting or routing form on the edge of a plate again, I have nothing but praise for another Bosch Power Tools. 28 of 29 people found this review helpful. Best Fixed-Base Router Richard Tabbutt I do a lot of routing, and I have had many routers over the years. 1617EVS forest is by far the best fixed base router I ever owned. The design with the exceptional quality of production will meet or exceed all expectations. Its variable speed, lightweight, comfortable handles, large bit capacity, and power is just the beginning. The main result is the height control. This is by far the best in the industry, but competition that I've found. You really have to try it and see for yourself - rings and racks are in competition not only not comparable, they are not even in the same class. In addition, this system works equally well on the table router and use your free hand on the Makita, Porter-Cable, etc. have to wake up and take notes. By the way, if you are looking for a router of immersion, there is still nothing to compare to the Makita 3612C, even after more than 20 years of production. Fixed Base 1617EVS Bosch, Makita 3612C fall to the bottom - this is the combination of severe or carpenter. 32 of 34 people found this review helpful. BOSCH does it again! By Todd J. Niblo As you can see from the title, I'm impressed with this router. I had this router for a year and did not attempt a project that has been less than pleased. She is calm and the sound is smooth and almost silent in comparison with the high tone 690 PC I have too. The unit is well built. Precision is a word that comes to mind. I use this on my way and I lift the handle D (variable) for the job by hand. Although I like the maple handles are still too nervous with your hands being so close to the spindle 25 000 rpm and little, especially after using the D-handle for some time in a way, when you change a few drops of this product Rout R Lift me with a smooth controlled descent, then release the lever to the base, press the TAB key a 1 / 4 and the engine is off. One can only say that trying this unit is crammed with detail engineering and exceptional reflexes. The variable speed is very convenient, Microfine adjustment is just that, and the 2 HP is more for all activities (including a high-profile job), I asked him. Ironically, I also bought a couple of router bits BOSCH, which were excellent and, quite the compliment to a great router. Strong, light, quiet and precise. Really an excellent product that will not disappoint. View all 63 comments ....
